Out of all the board games that I have played in my life, aeroplane chess is definitely my favourite. This game always gives me a nostalgic feeling when I play it. The older I get, the stronger the feeling. Compared to other board games, aeroplane chess allows us to eliminate opponents without the need to be skilled at all. This creates high entertainment value because all kinds of emotions (surprise, anger, entrancement, relief, horror etc.) are evoked. All you need to do is roll the dice, land on the spot where your opponents are and send their planes back to the hangar.
Having played aeroplane chess for more than two decades, I have battled with countless of people. However, I will say that there are mainly six types of players. If you have played the game long enough, you will have encountered each and every one of them. The Patient (and Unlucky) Guy I am not sure how the game works in other countries but for Singapore’s version, you can only move a piece out of the hangar if you roll one or six. Unfortunately, there will always be one player who keeps rolling two, three, four and five for a long time before he finally gets one or six and makes his first move. Attacker His objective of playing the game is not to transport all his pieces to the central base as soon as possible. Conversely, he prefers to stick close to his opponents and eliminate them whenever an opportunity arises. Having this type of player definitely increases the entertainment value of the game. Alright, I confess that I am this type of player. Stacker Loves to stack his pieces for the sake of convenience. A player like this is likely to have studied economics. However, all his pieces tend to be eliminated together by the mischievous Kicker or a ruthless opponent. Everyone will be laughing at him for choosing not to spread his risk. Camper This type of player will not continue moving his pieces after getting them out of the hangar. His preference is to wait for an opponent's piece to pass by their base before starting a chase. You can also call him the Kicker who ambushes. Fighter Pilot As the name suggests, this type of player moves his pieces at a much faster rate than other players. Throughout the game, he will either keep rolling six or land on a spot which is the same colour as his piece many times and therefore, is entitled to "hop" to the next spot of the same colour. It is better not to have Fighter Pilots in the game as they decrease the entertainment value. Victim Every game will definitely have at least one Victim. The other three players will collude and try to eliminate him because he is in the lead. When another player is in the lead, he becomes the next Victim. Another kind of Victim is one who has lots of bad luck on that day and keeps getting eliminated through no fault of his own. His pieces return to the hangar more times than any other player. Although my win rate in aeroplane chess is less than 50%, I don't think it is due to mediocre skills (this game doesn't even require skills!) but because I am an Attacker type of player. Most of the time, I aim to make my opponents’ pieces head back to the hangar. Making my way to the central base is not my top priority which explains why I do not win many games. The rules of aeroplane chess can also be tweaked to enhance the fun, laughter and difficulty. For example, every hangar will be filled with pieces of different colours at the start of the game. This enables pieces of different colours to be closer to one another which allows elimination to occur much earlier in the game. For the upcoming festive season, find some time to play a couple of customized aeroplane chess games with your family, colleagues or friends. Use your creativity to make the game as exciting as possible. Not only do you get to showcase your inventiveness, you also get to bond with others over laughs and eliminations.
